A while back my family and I undertook to study the book of Daniel. We wanted to do an inductive study so we purchased a Kay Arthur study book on Daniel. That study was the beginning of preparat... |

Author: Joshua Chapters: 24 Verses: 658 Bible Division: History Hebrew Arrangement: Former Prophets (Nevi'im) Key Word(s): Inherit (or inheritance) and posess (or possession) Theme: The conquest and division of Canaan. Date Covered: 1296 BC - 1266 BC. Writing Completed: ~ 1266 BC. There is a question as to the authorship of the book of "Joshua". Some consider it to be, as do I, Joshua himself and others consider that it may be Phinehas. Why? I'm not really sure. Phinehas was the last person mentioned in the book, but he was mentioned at the end of a list of where people were buried. He was the grandson of Aaron, which mad him next in line as high priest, but I still feel that Joshua was the author. When the book of Joshua opens, Moses had dies and left Joshua in charge, and Joshua was given the daunting task of leading the Israelites to conquer every tribe west of the Jordan River. In the first chapter Joshua is admonished by God to "...be strong and of a good courage..." four times. God gave Joshua a 3-step plan to conquer Canaan. It may seem a strange plan for conquering the many tribes in Canaan, but it worked.- The book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night.
- Do according to all that is written there.
- Remember the word Moses commanded, "The Lord your God has given you rest and has given you this land."
There is also a reference in the first chapter to just how much territory God gave the Israelites. Joshua 1:4 "From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea (The Mediterranean Sea) toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast." In this book are the stories of the waters of the Jordan River standing in a heap (at the time of year when it normally overflowed its banks) while the Israelites walked across; of the walls of Jericho falling down flat at the shout of the Israelites; of the sun standing still for a whole day while the Israelites fought their enemies; of the division of the cities west of the Jordan River to the tribes of Israel; and finally, of Joshua's challenge to the Isrealites in Joshua 24:15. You can believe the miracles or you can choose to disbelieve or ignore them. It's totally up to you, but how you treat the truth in God's Word will effect you both here and now and after death.
