Author: Moses Chapters: 34 Verses: 959 Bible Division: Pentateuch Hebrew Arrangement: Torah Key Word(s): Remember, Obedience Theme: Obedience and why obedience is necessary. Date Covered: 1296 BC. Writing Completed: ~ 1296 BC. "Deuteronomy" is derived from two Greek words meaning "Second Law". Deuteronomy has no additional laws; Moses just reiterates the law a second time. The time is set after the 40 years of wandering in which all the men but Caleb, Joshua, & Moses have died. With a new generation, Moses is repeating what God wants of them and why. It is interesting to me that it is written in Deuteronomy 4:44-45, "And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel: These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt,". From this point through the end of chapter 4 and on through chapter 5 Moses basically just repeats the 10 commandments. So what's the purpose of repeating all these commandments and telling the Israelites that they should be obeyed? I believe you'll find it in Deuteronomy 6:25, "And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us." You might want to make a special point to read the book of Deuteronomy. Why? Well, it seems to have been a favorite (since they quoted it) of many of the prophets and a favorite of Jesus, Himself. It is quoted by Jesus when being tempted by Satan at the end of his 40 days in the wilderness. (Matthew 4:1-11) Deuteronomy is also a sad book in that it is the one in which God has told Moses that he will not be allowed across the Jordan. God tells Moses that Joshua is to lead the Israelites over Jordan and that he, Moses, cannot even cross the river. Moses is allowed to go to the top of Mt. Pisgah and look West, North, South, & East and see all the land God is giving to the Israelites.
