Author: Moses Chapters: 27 Verses: 859 Bible Division: Pentateuch Hebrew Arrangement: Torah Key Word(s): Holy, Atonement Theme: How do we get access to God? Be holy! Date Covered: 1336 BC - 1296 BC. Writing Completed: ~ 1296 BC.
Where Genesis relates the happenings over thousands of years and Exodus relates happenings over hundreds of years, all the events recorded in Leviticus happened in about two months. The name of Leviticus was also given to it by the scholars who translated Hebrew into the Septuagint. The original Hebrew name meant "and He called". With a name like Leviticus you would think it was all about the Levites, but they are actually only mentioned in the book once. The original Hebrew name would have been much more accurate to the content. This book is filled with words spoken directly from God. The words "The Lord spake", "said", or "commanded" are seen some 56 times while the words "I am Jehovah" (our translation of His name) and "I am Jehovah, your God" are seen 21 times each. This book is all about a Holy God and what it takes to have access to Him. Over 90 times God, people, or things are spoken of as being "holy" or to be "holy". The strong inference is that to be in the presence of a Holy God all people and things must also be holy. What does it mean to be "holy"? In the simplest terms it means to be set apart for worship of God or for the specific use by God. It is also related to righteous. Though the word "righteous" is only found once in the (KJV) book of Leviticus, it is my contention that it could be used as a substitute for the word "holy" in most every reference to God or people. Why all this reference to people being or needing to be "holy"? Because God is Holy and Righteous and no person can be in His presence without being "holy" or "righteous" as well. This is why the laws concerning offerings, the laws of purity, the laws concerning vows, and all the other various and sundry laws were laid out in Leviticus. Do you think "ignorance of the law" is an excuse? Read about "ignorance" in 6 different places in chapter 4. Yet, with all these specific laws, mankind has still not been able to live up to them. We still need something more. We haven't been able to fulfill all these laws and since we haven't, we fail to reach that goal of being "holy" enough to have access to God. However, way back at the beginning (in Genesis) God already knew we wouldn't fulfill these works and He had determined a particular time in which He would provide the perfect way in which we could truly fellowship with Him and He with us. Keep reading the Word. You'll find that perfect way if you look with the right attitude...the attitude of one searching earnestly to commune with the Holy God.
