II Samuel covers the reign of David. I Chronicles and a few chapters of I Kings also cover this time period. The reign of David and his son, Solomon, could be called the Golden Age of Israel for several reasons. David increased the land of Israel by about 10 times; however, that is not what is most important in what is written here.
An underlying prophecy runs throughout David's reign. We call it the Davidic Covenant. God promised David "Thy throne shall be established forever." (II Samuel 7:16) This covenant is referenced many times throughout the Scriptures: in I Kings 2:4; to Solomon in II Chronicles 7:17-18; by David in several of the Psalms; by Amos in Amos 9:11-12; in Isaiah 9:6-7; in Isaiah 11:1 & 10; in Micah 5:2-4; in Jeremiah 22:29 & 23:5-6; and in Zechariah 3:8-9, 6:12-13, 9:10, 12:8, & 13:1 and others over a period of 500 years. Then in Luke, in repeating the greeting of the angel, Gabriel, to Mary, who was of the family of David, in Luke 1:30-33, references this same covenant as being fulfilled in Jesus.
There is no doubt that David was a "man after God's own heart", but he was also subject to the same disciplines we are. When David sinned against God he paid the price. Though God forgave David when David repented, David's son from this sin was taken from David (II Samuel 12:15-19). Be sure your sin will find you out.
Absalom, one of David's sons, was handsome, but something specific about him was noted as being weighed each year. What was it? (Hint: II Samuel 14) It may have contributed to his death. (II Samuel 18)
Did you know that Goliath had four (4) brothers? They are mentioned in II Samuel 21. Could it be that this is why David picked up five (5) smooth stones (I Samuel 17:40) when he went out to meet Goliath? One for each of the brothers?
